Why Database Management Software?
Database management software makes the web go round; without it, the web will come to a stand still. An article for those new with the concept of database management in general and database management software in particular. By Anneke Peters A database is a grouping of data that is saved in a format that a computer can read. Databases are an integral component to the functioning of the Internet. Database management software manages how the data is written to disk and how it can be retrieved. The internet would not work in the way we know it today without the implementation of databases. Database management software first appeared in the business world over forty years ago. It came into being after direct access devices were developed, supplanting data storage on magnetic tape or punch cards which had to be read sequentially. By far, the most common database design in use today is known as the relational model. All of the data is stored in data tables. Each table typically has individual rows of distinct data types, such as name, address, phone number, et cetera. Each of the rows has different information and this information is reference by column. These data sets reside on large storage mediums such as hard disks for computers to access. Moving these large sets of data is controlled by database management software. An engineer designs every data management system specifically for the task at hand taking into consideration requirements and available resources. It is very important to think about backup strategies when designing the data management systems. This will prevent any data loss. Another issue is security. A manager can determine the user who can access information. Users can be divided into groups to make it easier to give permissions to all the people in a group at the same time.
